  • 72% of us don’t have the energy to get through the day with 27% skipping the gym and 19% too exhausted for sex
  • DJ Sara Cox partners with Holland & Barrett to launch series of ‘Sunrise Sessions’ to get people’s day off to an energising start
  • Retailer launches online consultations and trains a 4,000-strong Energy Squad, for FREE advice on how to improve and sustain energy levels

The nation is experiencing an energy slump, with 81 per cent of Brits describing themselves as ‘tired’, ‘knackered’, or ‘worn out’ every day according to new research from Holland & Barrett. 3 in 4 (74 per cent) are not waking up feeling fully rested, with almost three quarters (72 per cent) admitting they often feel they do not have the energy to get through the day and resort to measures to boost levels.

A lack of energy is to blame for cancelled nights out (26 per cent) and date nights (10 per cent), with 1 in 5 (19 per cent) citing ‘low energy or tiredness’ as the reason for avoiding sex with their partner.

Alongside social plans, the energy slump is affecting people’s fitness routines, as 27 per cent cite regularly being too tired for physical exercise, while 1 in 10 (12 per cent) workers admit to being too tired to work and pulling a ‘sickie’ and 23 per cent have admitted their mental health has been affected.

Recognising the need for a recharge, Holland & Barrett, the UK’s health and wellness retailer, has teamed up with radio DJ Sara Cox to headline ‘H&B Sunrise Sessions’ – a series of early morning wellness raves across the UK to charge the nation from sunrise to sunset, energising their mind through music, powering up their body through movement, and encouraging reset through sleep and nutrition.

Designed to show people how to channel energy the right way, the early morning wellness raves are the latest feature in a growing trend for daytime and sober partying experiences across the UK, as wellness increasingly takes centre stage. One in four Brits find that exercise in the morning can help improve mental health (26%), focus (25%), productivity (21%) and mental clarity (21%).

In 2024, there was an 800 per cent increase in online searches for daytime events, with Holland & Barrett research showing 65 per cent of the nation are increasingly interested in taking part in more daytime activities that are aimed at improving wellbeing. That number rises to 83 per cent of those aged 18 to 34 years.

Given almost a third (29 per cent) of people confess they rely on coffee to keep energy up throughout the day, the high-street retailer is on a mission to help support and educate. An over 4,000-strong ‘Energy Squad’ has been trained and introduced across all 790 H&B stores, offering customers personalised advice on how to revive their energy levels. Plus, a new Energy Service allows customers to book a free online 15-minute appointment to speak to a specialist advisor.

Radio DJ Sara Cox, said: “I’m thrilled to be headlining H&B’s Sunrise Sessions and help energise the nation. My personal wellness journey has seen me swap late nights for early morning workouts, healthier nutrition and sleep routines. I’ve found the combination of the things I love - music, movement and morning twilight has helped me to improve and sustain my energy levels throughout the day. I look forward to sharing the experience with morning ravers this summer.”

Emily Foster, Nutritionist at H&B, comments: “We can all relate to cancelling social plans and skipping the gym when tired, but a consistent lack of energy which impacts general wellbeing and lifestyle does need addressing. We’re committed to helping people live life on full charge and our trained Energy Squad in-store, and our free bookable online consultations with specialist advisors can provide practical tips alongside personalised solutions proven to support mind, body and rest, so people wake up energised and ready to tackle the day.”
